Bill Owens is judging Alaska Positive this month in Juneau. Alaska Positive has a long history of first rate jurors; Richard Misrach, Garry Winogrand, Les Krims, Rod Slemmons, and Anne Tucker to name a few.
He'll be judging for the traveling show next week, and then making stops in Anchorage and Fairbanks for lectures. i'm hoping to be able to weasel my way into a few beers with him too.
i love his work in Suburbia, but, to be honest, didn't think he was really around anymore. his website tells a different story. Spark* did an interesting, and ultimately hysterical, video on what he's been up to.
and his bio page... he just dethroned Meyerowitz with the best shirtless portrait ever.

That Big-Wheel photo makes me laugh – hard. I was briefly a suburban kid with one of those things. Never rode it with such attitude though.
I remember going to that show at Berkeley. Larry Sultan's work was there too. It was a little surreal to see Sultan's "The Valley" steps from "Suburbia".
But, Bill Owens does seem like a really cool guy and I'm sure he has a great take on things. Just make sure you pick out the right beer. : )

jeope, i know. those eyes..
Ben, i would have loved to see Owens and Sultan showing together - two seminal bodies of work for sure.
hopefully i'll get the chance to show him some good Alaska brews..
funny -- i was just catching up on your blog and saw the bike photo, which i posted earlier today on Subjectify after someone emailed it to me for a "kids with bikes" theme... isn't it funny how as soon as you learn about something, you see it everywhere?
