Barry McWayne

Alaska photographer, and friend, Barry McWayne died this afternoon.

To be a photographer in Fairbanks, was to be a photographer who was helped by Barry. I met him shortly after moving to Fairbanks in 2005, and my intimidation quickly dissolved into respect. He was the standard bearer of the scene here, and a great champion for the medium. Although I confused, and frustrated, him at times I think - he was nothing but supportive of me and my efforts. He was quick with advice, and quicker with a laugh. His energy was infectious, and the community here has suffered a great loss in his spirit.

I visited him at the hospital here, before they moved him to Anchorage, but won't remember him that way. The last time I saw him was before his show at The Annex in June, where he and Charles showed a summation of their annual road trips South. The Wednesday before the opening, Barry, Charles, Adam and I hung the show - beautiful prints, stories and laughs. I'll miss you Barry.

Thanks for posting this Ben. Barry was an incredible man as well as being a phenomenal photographer. He was genuine, humble, and a friend to everyone he knew, and with him passes a wealth of knowledge about art in Alaska and in the Interior. Fairbanks has also lost a great patron and advocate of the arts... it is stunning how much loss can accompany the passing of one great man.
