we have a flight out of O'Hare in a few hours. it was a good trip home- galleries, chicago blues, sushi, the farm, and catching up with friends and family.

we'll be back in Alaska tonight. i just checked the weather there, it's 44 degrees below zero. home sweet home.

the Figge

my family and i went to the Figge Art Museum on Sunday. being a native of the Davenport area, I've looked forward to the opening of this space for quite sometime- it's been long overdue.

David Chipperfiled's design of the space is nothing short of spectacular. unfortunately, he has created an international institution in a decidedly un-international town. i was so saddened to see the state of Davenport's downtown. i expected growth. i expected, a downtown that had developed into a community- a community that could sustain itself. it made me sad to see an empty museum, empty streets, and a frustrating lack of investment (both financially and socially) in a downtown that has no excuse for not thriving.

my parents said that there had been many angry citizens when the city commissioned Chipperfield to build the Figge. "what about the Iowa architects", they said. the answer is plays in a loop in the Figge theater- the architect speaking about his vision. he speaks of the Mississippi, the disconnect between our modern culture and the river that made this town, the responsibility of a gallery, and it's ability to revitalize. he speaks of community and art. he speaks of art as a catalyst for change.

sometimes it takes an outside eye to see what those that are too close can not.

i hope Davenport can find it's way.

As for the collection? I will speak more in depth later. In short, I loved the large scale Martin Mull paintings, but was disappointed that their Lauren Greenfield collection was stashed away.

Chicago x 3

three cool things about Chicago:

1. i'll be there in 3 weeks!

2. Brian Ulrich is showing his "Thrift" series at the Rhona Hoffman Gallery from December 1st - January 6th. i really enjoy, and admire, Brian's work and am stoked that i will be in town to see this show.

3. i picked up a good condition copy of Changing Chicago today at the Literacy Council used book store for $1! a surprise to find a photography book, and also to see some early work by Jay Wolke there. he has a beautifully unlikely new (2004) book of photos of the Dan Ryan Expressway.

Chicago, Le Cliare, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and a few dialysis clinics thrown in just for fun. we're anxious to get home to see our families, and meet the team at Mayo.

the change of scenery will be a good jolt a well. i'm anxious to breath in the Midwest landscape, the Mississippi, the city..

Midwestern Friday

another rainy day in Fairbanks. it's a strange Friday, so i'm deeming this Midwest Friday. why? i have no idea, other than it seems lately like everything i'm interested in is coming from my old stompin' grounds.

> Minneapolis photographer, and teacher, Alec Soth has published his new book Niagara. The follow up to Sleeping by the Mississippi is continuing to catapult Soth into the stratosphere of the photography art world. Sleeping was, by far, the best photo book of 2005. there is an insightful interview with him over at conscientious- when he talks about process and anxiety it resonates.

> one of Soth's past students Brian Lesteberg has been making images of his family hunting in North Dakota for years, and his series is now getting the national recognition it deserves.

> a HOWie friend in Madison has kick started a new band, and their sound is delicious. give Thieves On Holiday a listen.

> the Figge Art Museum in Davenport turned one this month. i've yet to see it in person, but i've followed it's progress from a far. the facility has demanded space in every architecture magazine in the country over the last year. David Chipperfield is an internationl rock star in the architecture world, and the city pulled off something special in acquiring his talents. i'm anxious to witness the space when i am back in Iowa over the holiday.

> and, finally, i'm going to be an uncle again soon. Cory and Sharae are having a son and his middle name will be Benjamin. i'm honored, and i'm sure our grandpa Benny would have approved as well. i can't wait to see the little guy- the world needs more Bens.
